There are a lot of questions, assumptions, and preconceived notions about living the van life. Some imagine it as a glamorous, care-free existence filled with gorgeous sunsets every night and breathtaking landscapes every day. Others envision a more humble, burdensome routine where all your time is spent cooped up and scavenging for your next place to park for the night, charge your gear, and tuck into a Cup o‘ Noodles. So, what’s the truth? As always, it’s usually somewhere in the middle.
Have you ever wondered what it’s like living off the grid as a digital nomad? In this featured video, YouTubers Kara and Nate detail a normal day for two van lifers living in a converted sprinter van. From the mundane and frustrating experiences to the awe inspiring beauty and freedom, they give you a good idea of the kind of day-to-day things you’ll face living life on the road.
While this video certainly isn’t extensive, it gives you a good snapshot into a daily routine by showing all three meals of the day being prepared in the van, daily chores being handled, and modular aspects of the van interior being swapped out. It also touches on some of the essential items van lifers use everyday. Kara and Nate also do a good job of dispelling the glamorous myths by being honest about when they don’t really do things every day, such as breaking down the bed and turning it into a couch/table set up. Sometimes, it’s more work than it’s worth and there’s nothing wrong with admitting you like to lounge around in bed from time-to-time.
Keep in mind that these two are professional YouTubers who have been traveling the world together for years and filming their exploits for millions of followers, so their experience skews towards that lifestyle. Where filming vlog footage, editing on a laptop, and managing social media profiles may not be your van life experience, it’s always enlightening to learn how others live, work, and find success in this lifestyle.
